The exercise:

I just realized how long it has been since last we worked with the random CD prompt. Just another sign of how busy life has been, I suppose.

At any rate, that's what we're doing on this, the final day of May. Go find a song as randomly as you like and make use of its first line as your own. Giving credit where it's due, let your inspiration and imagination take over from there.

Did a family trip up to Penticton this morning/early afternoon to get some errands done. Went quite well, with Miles falling asleep for a little while in both directions and Max being entertained by videos.

Strange to think that this is only day two of six before I return to work.

Assuming the strawberries don't all ripen up before then. Probably doing a pick on Saturday regardless, just not sure how many we should be expecting to get off the plants at that point.

Mine:

Sweet Disaster by Whitehorse

Galileo was bluffing.

He had to be. Who would believe anything that crazy old fool said? He was already under house arrest for his crimes against the church and common sense, what more did he have to lose?

His life? He didn't have much of one, it seemed to me. Nothing worth spending too much time or energy on, at any rate. It would have been kinder, I'd often thought, if they'd just put him to death and had that dirty bit of business done with for good.

No, there was utterly no chance that he was telling the truth. He hardly seemed to believe the words he was speaking himself. I think all the fight must have been out of him by then.

At any rate, it made my decision all the easier.

"I call your bet," I told him as I slid two stacks of my chips into the middle of his wobbly kitchen table. After a moment's hesitation (a fairly decent bluff on my part, I should think) I added another stack. "And I raise you by another hundred."

The exercise:

Write two haiku about: deceit.

Trying to get Wednesday's post done tonight as well, so on with the haiku!

Mine:

A ruse. A facade.
Say what you will. I know you're
running from the truth.

Pretty lies slip from
pouting lips and I choose once
more to believe them

Monday May 29th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: disgust.

Sorry again for the late posting. I'll just get to it.

After pointing out that Tuesday's prompt will be delayed by a day. Hopefully it will go up shortly before Wednesday's prompt and I'll be back on schedule then.

Mine:

She sniffed as though it pained her
And then said with a sneer,
Watching you work fills me with disgust.
So I told her that's a shame
But it changes nothing,
For I'll continue to do what I must.

Sunday May 28th, 2017

The exercise:

Quick, before the month is over, let us return to The Dream Kingdom.

Edit: well, perhaps not quickly. More like eventually. Blame it on late night sleepiness and a desire to do my yearlong entry right.

Anyway, on with the delayed show.

Mine:

"Destroy the Dream Kingdom?" Dylan shook his head as though he were trying to clear cobwebs. "Why would they want that? They'd be killing themselves along with the rest of you. Sounds like a weird way of committing suicide to me."

"They are of the belief," Nystor replied with a grimace, "that the Kingdom will not be annihilated, but merely reset. And that when that reset occurs they will return in greater numbers, with greater strength. They have been performing rituals and ceremonies and sacrifices to ensure that this comes to be. Prince Reimar is to be their final sacrifice."

"Maniacs." Josh said quietly. "Wait, you said they believe the reset will happen with the prince's death. Sounds like you don't share that perspective."

"I do not. It is utter foolishness. There is nothing waiting for us on the other side of the end."

"Maybe The Islanders just have better imaginations than you," Olivia observed, her mouth now returned to its rightful place.

"That's enough talking for now, I think," Nystor announced after giving Olivia a lengthy stare. "We must begin our journey now. Your training shall continue en route."

"Woah, woah, woah!" Dylan put both hands up in front of himself, like he was intending to physically stop anyone from leaving the room. "Just hold on here. We've got lots more questions that need to be answered before we decide what comes next."

"So. Many. Questions." Olivia came to stand beside him and Dylan stood a little taller. After a slight hesitation Josh joined their human wall.

"I'm sure you do. So would I, I imagine, were I in your boots. Or shoes, as the case may be. We will have to do something about your attire, won't we?"

"Our clothes? We've got more important things to worry about than what we're wearing!" It was an effort for Dylan not to look down to make sure he was still wearing pants.

"Indeed. Like time. And how much of it you have left to find King Brekstan."

"That sounded like a threat." Olivia crossed her arms and cocked her head to the side.

"A threat? Goodness me child, no! Merely a statement of facts. Look for yourselves." Nystor pointed behind them and they turned to find three hourglasses, all seeming to match their heights, with silvery liquid beads dripping into the bottom chambers. "That is how much time each of you have. As I'm sure you have noticed, Dylan has a little less time remaining to him since he arrived here first."

"What happens when time's up?" Josh asked warily.

"Visitors to the Dream Kingdom can only be here for so long before they must wake and return to their own world. If they stay beyond that point... there is no returning. You will no longer be guests then. You will become permanent residents."

Saturday May 27th, 2017

The exercise:

Write a four line poem about: one last chance.

Heat was manageable for most of the day. Started to wilt a bit toward quitting time. Guess my body is still getting used to the change in weather.

Parks and washrooms were quite reasonable today. Was expecting worse with the warmer temperatures, but I'm certainly not complaining.

Two more days to go, then my six day weekend begins!

Mine:

You've sung this tune many times but
Let's dance this dance again my friend.
Just know that when the music stops
You and I will have reached our end.

Friday May 26th, 2017

The exercise:

Write four lines of prose about: midnight in a small town.

Kat is at her book club meeting this evening, so I'm home alone with two sleeping boys. Gave me a chance to get caught up some more on comments, which I always appreciate.

Work went well today. Hot though. Going to be even hotter tomorrow.

Might have to jump in the lake at some point.

Or at least make use of the splash park, which is now open until summer is done with us for another year.

Mine:

It is quiet here, teetering on the edge of nowhere. Nobody's hanging about, nobody's passing through - where would they be going anyway, that would necessitate driving through this little nothing of a town in the dark of night?

No place good, that's for sure.

Though if there was somebody rumbling down the road to somewhere else, I'd be mighty tempted to hitch a ride...

Thursday May 25th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the witch hunt.

Feeling okay about heading back to work tomorrow for another round of four days. More hot weather in store though, so we'll see how long that lasts.

Had another chiropractor visit today, my first in about a week due to scheduling issues. My rib was out of alignment again, which explains why my shoulder had been bothering me so much the last few days.

Glad I only have to wait until Tuesday for my next session.

Mine:

So which witch are we
Looking for today?
What has she done and
Who's agreed to pay?

Our rates are not cheap,
So I like to know
Who's footing the bill,
Who says stop or go?

Glinda... the Good Witch?
Wait. She wants who dead?
Dorothy's no witch!
What's got in her head?

I won't take this job!
No amount of... well.
Looks like I will, since
I'm under her spell...

Wednesday May 24th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the infection.

With only two days off this week, the focus for me needs to be on rest. So I stayed home this morning while Kat took the boys to the park and after lunch I let Max watch videos on the tablet for a while during Miles' nap.

Max is enjoying Peppa Pig these days, so it could have been worse.

Also caught up a bit on comments. The backlog is once again miserable, but I'm trying. At least the yearlong prompt is now an option, as I managed to read last month's entries. Maybe expect that on Sunday?

Mine:

It spread quickly,
Faster than any of us
Could have imagined possible.
Is it too late to halt the onslaught?
Perhaps, but we still cling to hope,
Despite all the lessons he's taught.
We can still turn things around -
This world is not yet dust.
So we wage war on hate,
Our eyes on the prize:
To unseat the D. T.

Tuesday May 23rd, 2017

The exercise:

Write two haiku about: the mascot.

Another hot day. Ready for my two days off now.

Mine:

in severe summer heatwave;
he's been dead two days.

Monday May 22nd, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: acrobatics.

I'm not totally sure that's the best prompt for my story, but I already used Spider-Man as a prompt so... here we are.

Plus I can't imagine there will be too many bathroom stories from my job that aren't the least bit gross, so I figured I'd best share this one.

Feel I should point out before getting to my tale that Max is having a sleepover at Kat's parents house tonight. Our home is... weirdly empty without him here.

Mine:

After my lunch break today I returned to the washrooms at the main beach here in Osoyoos. Which have been incredibly busy this weekend, needing two cleans each day and multiple restockings on paper towels and toilet paper.

Anyway. I go in to check on the men's washroom and only one of the two stalls was unoccupied. So I go check the women's side and then come back to see if I can have a look at the second stall.

Still someone in there.

Or so I thought.

Eventually I got tired of waiting (plus I was getting suspicious) and ducked down to find... nobody in there. But the door was locked.

Annoyed by the thought of someone purposely locking the door from the inside and then either crawling under the door (no way I was doing that) or climbing out the top, I went back to my work truck to get my litter grabber (since I figured I could reach the lock without having to climb in).

The walls on the stall, by the way, are maybe seven feet tall. Maybe closer to six and a half. I, on the other hand, am five foot eight inches tall.

So I use the top of the urinal next to the stall as a step to get myself up on the wall and grab for the lock. Got it, dropped down. And... nope I didn't. Tried again. Pretty sure I got it to slide all the way across. And completely sure the door still won't open.

Great. The lock is broken.

And now I had a completely different impression of the guy who was in there when it broke. Poor bastard.

Back to the truck. Grab a screwdriver. Climb up. Drop down inside the stall. Unscrew the lock. Try to fix it. Fail miserably. Back to the truck. Get a marker and a piece of paper. Write 'Lock broken Please knock before entering Thank you!". Tape it over the hole where the lock was. Make mental note to report the issue tomorrow morning so that the foreman can get someone to properly fix the lock. Leave to go clean Town Hall.

That, by the way, left out the first time I dropped into the stall, when I realized I couldn't get it unlocked by hand and I would need a screwdriver to open it.

I was pleased that I pulled that off without a) falling, or b) injuring myself in some awkward and impressive fashion. Was disappointed I couldn't fix it.

I think I impressed the two boys who were in there with their father, getting changed and dried off after being at the beach.

Hopefully I didn't give them any ideas of trying that themselves.

Sunday May 21st, 2017

The exercise:

Write about something or someone that is: unique.

Met a lovely couple (and their three dogs) at Cottonwood Beach this morning. They're not the first locals I've come across who don't think our local bylaws apply to them, but there were certainly the most unpleasant I've talked to.

I will only say two things about it. One, I am glad that I am not a bylaw enforcement officer. And two... whatever the enforcement officers get paid, it is not enough.

It was a hot one today. Combined with the long weekend crowds it felt like a summer preview.

Mine:

I am a beautiful, one of a kind butterfly, to whom the rules clearly do not apply. They are for that lady, and that child, and most definitely that guy. But all these restrictions and limitations are not for I.

I am the exception to the rule, the epitome of cool, the smartest kid in school. Save your legislative guidance for all these other fools.

This life is mine, I am the pearl before these swine. I was created by a divine design, only entering this world when all of the stars were perfectly aligned.

I... you're writing me a ticket?

How much is the fine?!?

Saturday May 20th, 2017

The exercise:

Write a four line poem that is not only a poem, but is also a: drinking song.

Town is very busy, what with the long weekend and all. Definitely kept me on my toes. Opening the washrooms tomorrow morning could be interesting but hopefully everyone behaves themselves out there tonight.

Found a broken toilet paper dispenser in one of the washrooms this morning. With the full crew not back until Tuesday I felt like I should at least try to replace it myself. It took a few trips and a few different screwdrivers but I did manage it in the end.

Felt like a king.

A handyman king.

Or something.

Whatever, it felt good.

I should get some sleep now.

Mine:

Pour me another, lads -
The last one surely missed its mark!
Pour some for yourselves, lads -
Tonight we're drinking in the park!

Friday May 19th, 2017

The exercise:

Write four lines of prose about: my new car.

Kat took a solo trip to Penticton this morning to run some errands and have an appointment, so I had the boys to myself. The weather was perfectly agreeable, so we went to the park for a few hours. Max bumped into a friend, but also made a couple new friends, which was great to see.

They played hide and seek for a long time which, if you've never seen three four year old boys play it, is an absolute treat to watch. Max showed off by counting to thirty, the boys either giggled or called out 'I'm over/up/down here' if it was taking too long for the seeker to find them, and everybody had a blast.

Back to work tomorrow for four days, then I only get two days off, then it's on for four more days since I traded a couple days with Tammy. Thankfully at the end of that stretch I get six days off to make up for it.

Assuming I survive working eight out of the next ten days.

Mine:

Hey, check out my fresh new ride! I think I'm gonna get some sexy flames put on the side! I'll be on the prowl, I'll be on the attack!

Hey... who put those kid seats in the back?

Thursday May 18th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the bomb.

Went grocery shopping with Miles this morning after we dropped Max off at playschool. While he was having fun making a Cat in the Hat hat, Miles enjoyed driving around the store in the grocery cart and I was able to get all the shopping done.

Worked out nicely.

This afternoon while Miles napped, Max came with me to my chiropractor appointment and then we squeezed in a bit of park time before coming home to take care of Miles so that Kat could finish up with some work she was doing.

Before dinner, and a little bit after, Max and I attempted to clean up and organize his room. It was not easy with Miles 'helping', but we did get rid of three cardboard boxes he'd been hoarding in there (two of them on the very large side of things). It looks loads better now, but we still have his craft box, his toy box, and his bookshelf to tackle.

Hopefully tomorrow.

Mine:

They say that I am a
Ticking time bomb.
That I am only safe when
I remain calm.
I am offended by this.
I don't like this claim at all.
Can't handle my heat?
Can't wait until my fall?
Christ, y'all make me sick.
Keep your distance if you're scared.
Keep running but if you cross me
Know that you won't be spared.

Wednesday May 17th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the knock-off.

Finally got around to cleaning out the car and giving it an oil change this afternoon. I'd been ignoring the automated reminder for quite some time now, but between the weather and not having much free time it just wasn't happening. Glad to have that done now though.

Also went for a family walk at Haynes Point this morning. It's been a while since we made it out there and thankfully the lake levels weren't too high to get in the way too much. Though there was a rather large puddle that we couldn't get around that blocked a section of the boardwalk.

Oh, and we got some more seeds into the garden this afternoon as well. Productive day.

Mine:

She wanted a thousand dollars
For her prized pure bred dog,
But upon closer inspection
It was just a hairy log

Tuesday May 16th, 2017

The exercise:

Write two haiku about things that are: free.

Took Max to get his allergies tested this afternoon. The only things he reacted really strongly to were dairy (no surprise there) and corn (okay, that was unexpected). He showed some sensitivity toward gluten (better than expected), coconut (what?), peanuts (sure, why not), sunflower (yeah, okay), and oranges (see coconut above).

The dietician did some work on the dairy and corn and we're going to keep him off all of the above for the next three weeks. Then we'll take him in for a follow up appointment to see how his body is doing.

Overall it went pretty well and Max was his charming, silly, funny self and got along great with the dietician.

We had to rush a bit to get back to Osoyoos afterward for my chiropractor appointment but we managed to not be excessively late. She said this time was the most my rib moved of any of the adjustments she's done, which is good news.

And that I should expect to be pretty sore tomorrow as a result.

Yay...

Mine:

Love don't cost a thing?
You believe that and your love
won't stick around long...

*     *     *

You don't like my rules?
That they're unfair and unjust?
Then feel free to leave.

Monday May 15th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the raccoon.

Because I was just woken up by a raccoon knocking something over just outside our door on the deck. Took a while to get it to walk around front into the light, but I saw he or she was a pretty good size once he/she did.

Town Hall was about as bad as I figured it would be - much too big a job for the time allowed. I think next week I'll get even more done on Sunday and see how that works out.

I thought having my 'Monday' on Friday was bad. Apparently having my 'Friday' on Monday is much worse.

I quite regularly forgot what day it was throughout my shift. I had to stop myself from doing another four lines of prose prompt.

I think I am ready for my weekend now, thanks very much.

Mine:

Masked bandit
In the night
Looking to see
What he might
Find around
The house -
He's much larger
Than a mouse!
I think I shall
Watch from here.
Uh, nothing
To do with fear.
Just, uh, I think
I like this view,
Because, um, it's like
Being at the zoo?
Yes, that's it,
That's quite right!
Especially at
This time of night...

Sunday May 14th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the vandal.

Cleaning the offices at Town Hall for the first time tomorrow. Not sure I'm looking forward to it, but I'm glad I was able to get a head start on it today by doing the public washroom attached to the building.

Pretty quiet day, as the weather was going back and forth, once again, between sunny/warm and cloudy/windy/cold.

Had a Mother's Day dinner at Adam and Becky's house this evening with everybody on the farm. Was a nice chance to get together, even if I was tired after work.

I hope all the mothers out there had a great day, whether it was your country's Mother's Day or not.

Mine:

I leave my mark
For all to see,
But only I
Will know it's me.

Some letters here,
Some damage there,
Just to bother
Those who care.

But that's enough,
For now at least,
To make me smile
With all my teeth.

Though one day soon
I will crave more,
And then they'll see
What I have in store...

Saturday May 13th, 2017

The exercise:

Write a four line poem about something that has been: ransacked.

Weather was all over the place today. Just glad the rain held off until it was time for me to head for home.

I think I'll pack a parka, a rain jacket, and shorts for work tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

Mine:

Socks, shirts, underwear -
Just throw 'em on the floor.
Rings, jewels, money -
Grab 'em and look for more...

Friday May 12th, 2017

The exercise:

Write four lines of prose about: before the flood.

With the cool, wet spring and the recent increase in temperatures causing the snow at higher levels to melt, lake levels have been very high for the last week or so. Everybody's talking about water levels and how much flooding there will be and when it will happen. People in lower lying areas have been sandbagging.

Personally, walking the beaches is a completely different experience now compared to when I started this job. There are stretches I can no longer patrol because the lake has come right up to walls or tree/bush lines. Probably more than fifty percent of the sand has disappeared under water. It's pretty crazy.

We dodged a storm today but the flood watch will be continuing for a while yet.

Mine:

These waters will rise, because Mama Nature say so. Rivers will become lakes, lakes will become oceans, because Mama Nature say so. We will walk until we find the highest ground, to stay dry, to stay safe... because Mama Nature say so?

No man, that just be common sense.

Thursday May 11th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the bug catcher.

Woke to pouring rain this morning. After breakfast it had pretty much stopped. Held off for the rest of the day, but it is currently pouring again.

Hoping it gets it all out before tomorrow, as my weekend is ending tonight and my four day work week begins at 7 am.

Oh, the prompt? Inspired by Max, I'm sure you'll be surprised to hear. He has a little plastic bug catcher thing and he's been hunting insects for the last week or so with it. The other day he caught a caterpillar and he's been obsessed with it, always checking to see if he's okay, bringing him with him wherever he goes, and refreshing his food (lettuce from the greenhouse and grass from the yard, mostly).

They've started doing 'show and tell' at playschool on Thursdays so, obviously, that's what he wanted to bring today. I made sure this morning that the little guy was still alive (amazingly, yes he was) and then said that was a great idea.

Apparently it went very well, and the other kids were all quite fascinated with his catch. As they should have been, clearly.

Mine:

Ants and spiders,
Butterflies and dragonflies,
Under his watchful eye.
Giving them food, water, and
Showering them with attention,
Like they were his own children.
Insects living the good life,
Free from all predators -
Except, perhaps, overeager fingers...

Wednesday May 10th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: battle scars.

Two nights in a row of falling asleep before accomplishing anything blog related is a pretty spectacular fail on my part. Sorry about that, and I hope it doesn't happen again.

I should probably just get to my take before sleep wins again.

I haven't forgotten about the yearlong prompt, by the way. Just trying to get caught up on comments a little bit before the next installment hits.

Mine:

The old wounds are still tender
Despite the passing of the years;
He tries to hide the flinches
But does better with his tears.

Words still hurt and trust's long gone -
Too many promises were broken.
She tells him that she's changed now
But he hears the lies unspoken.

She wants back in but he says No -
He can see where things are going.
One day his guard would drop and
His blood would once more be flowing.

Tuesday May 9th, 2017

The exercise:

Write two haiku about: when I was young.

Apologies for mine, I guess I was in a wistful mood while writing them. Not sure either of them is particularly accurate, but I liked how they turned out anyway.

Sigh, sleep. One day I'll get my evenings figured out so that I'm not trying to write blog posts late at night.

Or, you know, probably not.

Mine:

Invincible? No.
I just thought that I would live
until forever...

Monday May 8th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the dead sea.

The actual one. A fictional one. The song. Whatever inspiration brings your way.

Had my second chiropractor appointment today. Got some good cracks in, returning for more on Thursday. The plan is for her to see me twice a week for the next six weeks and that should get me most of the way back to where I should be.

That's going to be a whole lot of cracking.

Mine:

They called me a fool when I told them me plans. Those shortsighted, drunken, lazy good-for-nothings wouldn't know a good idea if it spat in their toothless, doe-eyed, filthy faces.

And this be damned sure a good idea. Best I've ever had, surely.

Only fools believe the tales they tell of this place. That this here sea belongs to the dead. That no ship that has sailed these waters has ever returned. Lies and stories made up to keep those fools away.

But away from what?

Aye, that be the question.

And I intend to find the answer. The shiny, glittering, golden answer.

So tell me, lads. Are ye with me?

Sunday May 7th, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: twists and turns.

Kat and the boys returned home this afternoon after a successful time away. Sounds like the wedding reception was a lot of fun, though Kat was stuck getting the boys to sleep when the dancing was happening.

Had a pretty good day of work. Feeling very ready for my four days off now.

Mine:

"Hold on, here comes another one!"

"No, please no..."

"Wheeeeeee!"

"Oh God..."

"Woah, that was a good one, huh Dad?"

"Yeah... best one yet, right? The road's gotta straighten out now though... right?"

"Nope! Here comes the next S curve! Hold on, Dad!"

"... I think I'm going to be sick."

Saturday May 6th, 2017

The exercise:

Write a four line poem about something or someone that is: unhinged.

One of the washroom stall doors wasn't closing properly, so I reported it to the foreman. He sent someone out to look at it and the next time I went to that washroom the door... was gone.

That's one way to solve the problem, I suppose. (I suspect that it's either being fixed at the shop or getting replaced altogether).

Work today had its ups and downs. More downs in the morning, more ups in the afternoon. Which I guess is a better way to end the day than if things had gone the other way around.

Missing the boys and Kat tonight, but also enjoying some peace and the chance to do a few things I want to do. Like watch shows on Netflix and attempt to catch up on comments here (only a month behind now, wheeeeee...).

Mine:

No one speaks to him, and
Understandably so.
Things can seem okay, then
Suddenly: look out below!

Friday May 5th, 2017

The exercise:

Write four lines of prose about something that has been: refueled.

The threat of thunderstorms remained only that today, a threat. I am thankful for this, as the one that hit last night would have been rather severely unpleasant to work in. Lightning was flashing across the sky every five to ten seconds for an extended period of time.

Kat and the boys are headed to Kamloops tomorrow for a cousin's wedding reception. Becky and Adam and their girls, as well as Kat's parents, will be going as well. I shall remain behind, as I'm working both tomorrow and Sunday.

Which means I shall be the only person on the farm tomorrow night.

I expect to have a good sleep.

And great difficulty getting out of bed Sunday morning.

Mine:

When we lived in Vancouver I absolutely hated people who smoked cigarettes. Not just when they did it in public, either - if I could smell it on you (particularly on the bus), I was thinking decidedly unpleasant thoughts about you.

Since we've been in Osoyoos that hate has faded though, with the additional space and the general lack of interaction with people who enjoy sucking cancer down their throats.

Now, only nine days into my new job (honestly, it probably only took two or three), having picked up hundreds of cigarette butts in parks and on beaches and in a washroom or two (six in the main washroom this morning alone), it is safe to say that hatred has been fully refueled.

Thursday May 4th, 2017

The exercise:

Write something that has to do with: the wheelchair.

The weather today made me believe that we'd skipped spring this year and just went straight to summer. Hot, hot, hot.

It looks like we'll be taking a little break over the next two days to get some more cloud and rain, then it'll be back to sunshine and summer.

I think we've waited long enough for this bounty of blue skies.

Mine:

A seat that moves
In ways his legs
No longer allow,
Wheeling his way
Down the streets
And through the crowds.

It's different,
Certainly,
Than how it used to be:
He's not as nimble
And, well, much
Shorter, as you can see.

But it gets him here
And gets him there
All on his own,
And he doesn't
Have to tell anyone
Where he's goin'.

Wednesday May 3rd, 2017

The exercise:

Write about: the negotiation.

Long day (family trip to Penticton this morning plus helping friends move this evening) means I'm barely keeping my eyes open.

Plus I get to get up early for work tomorrow - hurray!

So I should just get some sleep.

Mine:

No one in the room was comfortable. Chairs complained as their occupants shifted in a near constant symphony of nervousness. Pens were choked to death by white knuckled fists. Glasses and cups stood empty, their water and coffee having long since escaped through now dry mouths.

The clock on the wall ticked, ticked, ticked onward toward the looming deadline, unrelenting.

Noses twitched and lips curled at the scent of stale sweat on shirts as eyes searched for a window to open, even just a crack.

But there were no windows in that room.

Nor was there much hope.

"This is our final offer."

"You said that three offers ago."

"Just take the deal so we can all go home to our families, okay?"

A slow shake of the head. No, again. Teeth ground together. Veins throbbed in foreheads and necks. Fingernails dug into palms until blood sprung forth.

And still the clock ticked, ticked, ticked onward...

The exercise:

Write two haiku about: the chiropractor.

Had my first ever visit to a chiropractor today. I've had tenseness in my neck and shoulders for... longer than I care to admit, but recently I'd aggravated something in my left shoulder area that I wanted to get checked out.

The short story is that I've got a rib out of alignment (which sounds, to me at least, more horrible than it actually is, apparently) and I'll be seeing her again for more cracking on Monday.

Other things happened today, but I'll get to sharing that tomorrow. Bed time now.

Mine:

I've got a pretty
high tolerance for pain. "Good,"
she said. "You'll need it."*

*     *     *

With a crack, crack here,
and a crack, crack there, you'll be
good as new once more.

*"What?" I replied, feeling rather worried. She immediately clarified that she wasn't talking about what was about to happen (she meant it would come in handy raising two boys, as we'd been talking about Max and Miles earlier). We had a laugh and eventually I relaxed again.

The exercise:

Write about: the navigator.

Max made a treasure hunt map this morning and insisted on bringing it in the car this afternoon so that we would know where we were going (in reality, to get smoothies from a place we've been many times before). I told him he could hold on to the map and be the navigator then.

"A whatagator?" he asked (one of his new favorite games is to pretend to not understand what we just said).

"A navigator," I said.

"An alligator?" he asked.

"Sure. You can be the alligator navigator."

And then suddenly there were alligators on the map that we had to get past in order to get to the X which marked the spot.

Parenting life, you guys.

Mine:

"Take the next right."

"You're sure about that?"

"Trust me. I've got the map, remember?"

"Yeah, but you also don't have your glasses."

"I don't need them - this is big print. Take the next right."

"... okay."

"All right, our hotel should be coming up on the left in a few blocks."

"There are literally zero buildings on the left. Do you mean the right?"

"Did I say right? No. Keep driving."

"There's nothing remotely hotel-like on the left. And it's starting to get dark. Are you sure we're in the right place?"

"Of course I'm sure! I've got the... oh."

"Oh?"

"It's nothing, don't worry about it. You might want to do a U-turn though."

"... did you just turn the map around?!"
