Distortion has a mathematical meaning, though that Wikipedia link is a pretty poor attempt to describe it. While wikipedia has definitely got better over the last ten years, I think all the usual caveats about the information it offers still apply. Rather than say anything too complicated I'll just note that seeing if circles are distorted to ellipses is really not what we use distortion for....
