The exercise:

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, use the title of one of his works as the first line of your poem.

Mine:

The cat in the hat
Was really quite fat;
With each step he took
The ground moaned and shook!
His hat was so big
It held eighty figs;
And when he would sit
Birds nested in it!

His end was so sad:
He tried a new fad
To lose all that weight
To find a new mate -
But the diet lied,
And soon his insides
Grew so far apart
They stopped his poor heart!

  1. Lol, the poor cat! That's quite a diet he was on.

    I've never read any Dr. Seuss, which may put me at a disadvantage here, but let's see what we can do:

    The Lorax

    Gaia was weary and wanted a rest,
    So she went to her office and made a request,
    She wrote it all out and sent it by fax,
    Demanding a visit from the Lorax.

    The Lorax was sleeping when his fax machine beeped,
    He leapt out of bed and shrieked and shrieked,
    And then he saw Gaia's message was there,
    So he quieted and read it and chewed on his hair.

    "Gaia needs me!" he said, getting dressed in a jiffy,
    Finding his church clothes so he looked rather spiffy.
    "I shall look after the planet while she takes a snooze,
    I shall eschew my drugs, and I'll disregard booze!"

    He arrived at her office in a limousine car,
    Sauntered in with an attitude and said, "Here we are!"
    Gaia smiled and she thanked him and gave him his task,
    To count all the snowflakes in great Alask(a).

  2. I'd say you did a damn fine job considering you haven't read any :)

    Your homework for next time is to read two Dr. Seuss books, by the way.
