The exercise:

I think it's time for another musical linkstravaganza. But I'm looking for your help this time around.

I've been working on a playlist for our wedding reception and require your recommendations to help fill it out a bit. So: give me some songs that you can picture yourself dancing to outdoors on a hot summer night. Please :)

See below for a sample of what I've come up with so far.

Mine:

The first song after our official first dance will be Sweet Rose by Matt Costa (from the ridiculously great Songs We Sing CD that will be getting a lot of play that day). It is pretty much perfect for the occasion, so anything remotely like this would be great.

Another song that's definitely getting played is Girl by Beck (from his brilliant Guero CD). This just has that sunny, happy feeling I'm looking for. Despite the lyrics, somehow.

A song I discovered recently, thanks to Kat actually, is New Soul by Yael Naim (from her self-titled CD). What a treat this find was. I love the lyrics and the upbeat instrumentals that go with it.

Last up is Put It On Me by Ben Harper (from his Lifeline CD). Ben has been one of my favorite artists since I was introduced to his music while backpacking around New Zealand and this will be just one of a handful of his songs that will be helping to make July 31st extra special.

Now it's your turn.

  1. Hmm, now that's a tricky request! I'm pretty certain I'm the wrong person to ask (see below), but in the interests of trying to be helpful, I might suggest Party Hard by Andrew WK at some point as it is a pretty infectious song. (I'm also tempted to suggest "I get wet" by the same artist, but that's more for a best man's prank as the first song of the evening).
I'll also suggest Your thesaurus won't help you now by Paper Moon (you'll have to check the list on the right hand side of the page) as a song suitable for a writer's wedding.

    Songs for a wedding
"We're going to a wedding, GaGa."
    "Whose wedding, Honey Bee?"
"Marc Aucoin's, GaGa. He doesn't know it yet though."
"Shall I play my entire set list for him then? On repeat, several times?"
"Now why would you want to ruin his special day like that, GaGa? You're being a bad, bad girl, GaGa. Bad GaGa!"
"Will you be dancing then, Honey Bee? With all the Single Ladies?"
"If he likes it, he should put a ring on it."
"Oh Honey Bee, you're too much!"

(Well, I couldn't resist. You must have guessed I'd suggest Lady GaGa at some point....)

  2. Ooh, I quite like that Thesaurus song :D

And at least you had the decency to make your GaGa suggestion funny :)

  3. Ooh, I like this request! And yes, that song by Beck is amazing. It makes me want to hop on a flight to Brazil, somehow. :)

Here are some songs that I think would be good...

    Plumb: "Only You"

The Beatles: "And I Love Her"

    Regina Spektor: "Us"

    New Pornographers: "Use It"

I have so many more, but I don't want to post a never-ending comment, so just let me know if you need more. If you haven't heard of the artists above before -- excluding The Beatles, bien sûr -- check them out, because they're all pretty damn good (in my very humble opinion). Happy wedding planning! :D

  4. Annie - awesome, thank you! I hadn't heard that Regina Spektor song before but I reckon it's a keeper!

And absolutely feel free to suggest some more - I've got a lot of time to fill with music :D

Of course there will be plenty of song requests as well, I'm sure, I just want to be sure to include stuff I think is awesome :D

  5. Can I make some anti-requests? Like "No Chicken Dance!!!!", and "No Macarena!". :) I've seen some wedding DJ's song lists, they're dire.
I'm not sure you'll take any of my suggestions, but I'll see what I can come up with that might make the cut. ;)
