The exercise:

Welcome to October! Around these parts, Friday is a day for four lines of prose. Normally I just give you guys a topic to write on, but today I shall do something a little different.

You can do what you like with your first three lines, but your fourth line must end with the word diamond.

Have fun, and may this be a good month to you all.

Mine:

"You're an odd man, Mr. Davies," I said with a shake of my head.

"And just what, exactly, do you mean by that?" he asked around the unlit cigar he'd been chewing on for most of the night. I pointed at the glass display case that took up three quarters of his study and laughed.

"I don't think that most people would so proudly showcase their ownership of the world's largest fake diamond."

  1. An interesting twist today: four lines ending with the word diamond. I like what you've done with it -- is that where the inspiration for the prompt came from. And the world's largest fake diamond must surely be worth something....

    Mine:
The bakery window was a stunning showcase: red velvet cupcakes with a deep crimson crumb and snowy-white icing laid side by side with glittering rock cakes. Sadly, as my teeth had just discovered, there was a price to pay for such perfection. The red velvet cupcakes, up close, were revealed to be made of red velvet, and their icing was shimmering satinet. The rock cakes were actually cakes, but they glittered because they were liberally studded with shards of industrial-grade diamond.

  2. Marc – The description of your character is alive when I read it for the first time! That is amazing!

Greg – I really like the tone you place between sentences, it leaves me with a deep impression, great take!

    Mine:
Shall we check out that jewelry store in downtown, honey? She whispers into my right ear with a soft alluring tone.

Sure, of course, I said without hesitating at all but I know that my pocket is going to burn. Honey, she directs my attention towards that diamond.

  3. Marc- I loved the story. What a great take on your own prompt.
Greg- I do not envy your trip to that particular bakery, but what a fascinating idea!
Zhongming- Would this be a bit of self-disclosure????
    ------
I watched him, the intensity of the moment etching heavy lines on his tan face. He stepped forward focused, unable to hear the deepening silence that was surrounding him. Our small community-- defined by the tall fences, smell of hotdogs and beer, and the blinding sunshine-- held it's breath in anticipation of success or failure, the line between the two being so thin. The CRACK echoed across the field and over the stands; on its heels was a thunderous roar of gratitude as the same tan faced man leisurely rounded the baseball diamond.

  4. hello, everyone. hope you guys are enjoying the season's first frost.

    ---

Ifor opened the door, certain that the person he intended to see was inside; he was.

"What do you want?" Mr. Hallowords bellowed, cigar hanging between his mouth, spectacles resting at the end of his large nose, his bulging eyes bloodshot.

Ifor smiled, one front tooth missing and, like a flash of lightning, pulled his revolver, aimed it at his target and pulled the trigger.

He approached Mr. Hallowords' body whose head had slumped back on his leather chair, and having ascertained that the bullet had rendered the old man dead, he closed the door behind him as he whistled "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".

  5. Greg - I'm not really sure where the idea came from, to be honest. Glad you liked it though!

That sounds like an expensive and painful bakery!

Zhongming - what Heather said :)

Heather - ah, baseball diamond! I hadn't even thought of that interpretation. Nicely done, some great descriptions in there.

Summerfield - that was great! Sounds like the opening of a novel to me :)

  6. Heather - I wrote that from my imagination. I can only think of romance when I look at diamond, which is such a beautiful stone. I assure you, you will be the first to know if I ever did that :)

    Marc - :)
