The exercise:

The word of the moment is: numb.

Kat fell asleep on my arm, then I fell asleep, and now here I am, struggling to get feeling back into my fingers. Good times!

Despite a near-constant howling wind, we managed to get some good weeding and planting done in the garden today. Tomorrow we're back to harvesting, as we prepare for Saturday's market.

Mine:

The only way I'm winning the fight
On this twisted tree night
Is if I manage to strike back -
Yes, I must get on the attack -
Before sensation returns
And I actually feel that burn.

  1. Is the wind better or worse than the blazing sunshine? And, although I'm not sure why this should remind of it, how's the ultimate frisbee going? I feel like I should have heard mention of it in a post by now if we've had the hockey....
Your poem's got a little bit of an edge to it, which I think is enhanced by its brevity. Which I'm sure had nothing to do with pins and needles in your hands while typing ;-)

    Numb
"And now how do you feel?" Dr. Fraud leaned back in his chair and laced his fingers together. On his desk the Newton's cradle ticked and tocked in a soothing fashion and his laptop beeped twice, reporting an Oedipus Complex had been detected on the hard drive.
"Numb," said Bethany. She was strapped down to the analyst's couch and a burly psychiatric nurse was sitting on her legs.
"Good, good," said Dr. Fraud closing his eyes and daring to relax at last. "Is this because of the horrific way your mother died last year?"
"My mother's dead?" Bethany's voice shot up an octave, and Dr. Fraud opened an eye warily. She was still strapped down. He checked his notes.
"Ah, I see. Your doctor doesn't want you to know that yet," he said.
"My mother's dead?" said Bethany again. Her free hand groped for leverage on the static-inducing carpet.
"No." said Dr. Fraud firmly. "How does that make you feel?"
"Numb," said Bethany, suddenly sounding dreamy. Dr. Fraud opened both eyes and saw to his horror that she'd found a high-heeled shoe on the floor under the couch. He started to shout a warning, but found he'd managed to knot his fingers together and fell forwards trying to pull his hands apart. Bethany lashed out at the nurse with the heel, the Newton's Cradle exploded with unresolved sexual tension and the laptop beeped twice and shut down.

  2. Numb

    Long week. Friday night.
    Beer, TV, TV dinner.
    So pleasantly numb.

  3. Greg - I'll take sunshine over the wind any day of the week. Sadly, as far as I'm aware, there is no ultimate being played around here. So it looks like my playing days are done... which my body isn't too sad to hear.

Dr. Fraud! I've missed him :)

Aholiab - I could go for a beer right now. Too bad I have to be up in less than six hours.

    I should get to bed.

  4. I like feeling numb,
    I really really do.
    I like feeling numb,
    I hope you do to.
