The exercise:
Write something that has to do with: hats.
The sun actually returned today! It was glorious.
Mine:
Uncle Ted owned three cowboy hats, all black. Originally, at least. By the end only one could legitimately lay claim to that color.
The first was his work hat. This he wore in the fields and stables, and was by far the most used - and loved, I've always suspected. Over the years it collected more and more dirt, until it was in danger of being lost forever if it was dropped on bare earth.
The second he liked to call his Town Hat. A trip to the store or bank or pub wouldn't have been complete without it. Sunshine turned that one a mottled grey.
Last came his formal hat, only dusted off on serious or solemn occasions: weddings, funerals, and visits to his wife's parents in New York. Remained as black as it was the day he first brought it home.
When Uncle Ted passed on there was some debate as to which hat should accompany him to the hereafter. In the end common sense did finally prevail, I'm glad to report.
Hats
ReplyDeleteI’ve had them knitted for me and even crocheted some for myself - in blue, grape, multicoloured rainbows, and some with sparkly threads; one looks like a flower pot, I designed it myself. It makes my nose look big, maybe I’ll op-shop that one.
I wear them under hoodies or with extra ear muffs when the wind is really cold.
Back in the ’seventies I wore a broad-brimmed white hat to my sister’s wedding. Now she’s sixty, how old does that make me feel? I wore it later to the races; it was too conservative to win a prize. Now it’s a different century and fascinators are all the go.
Straw hats with strings to hold them on are essential aids against the sun to keep your face looking younger than you really are. Of course you could decorate them with flowers but that’s too flouncy for my taste.
I hope I am never a member of the pink hat club - they’re cancer survivors, I don’t want to go there.
There’s a poem you can google about the Purple Hat, but I’m not old enough for that, yet, although it’s funny how hats can tell the story of your life, of decades past and wisdom hopefully gained.
At least I haven’t walked around with tin foil on my head.
Yet.
The Hat

The Hat awakes,

Glad you were able to get a new laptop Marc. Lots going on here -with my daughters family moving in and a baby on the way :)
Writebite - haha, I like that 'yet' :D
ReplyDeleteCathryn - short but good :)
Morrigan - hahaha, excellent.
Sounds like a full time for sure. When is the baby due?
My daughters baby is due January 10th. Now that I have gotten over the shock of being "grand" before reaching fourty I'm pretty excited about it.
ReplyDeleteMorrigan - that's awesome, congratulations :D
