The exercise:

Write a four line poem about: heat.

It is hot, hot, hot, and I am not, not, not complaining. I've waited too long for this.

But, you know, could we maybe turn the furnace down a notch or two?

Today was a productive one, as we got a bunch of things done that we'd been putting off for weeks. I did some rototilling in the garden in the morning to clean up the paths between some of our carrots and beets that were filling up with weeds, and then in the afternoon: stairs for the deck, at long last!

Kat's dad and I got the set on the front side finished, which was conveniently in the shade of one of our walnut trees. The back side will have to wait for a cooler morning or evening.

Mine:

The sun looks down
From a clear blue sky,
And doesn't blink
As Earth slowly dies

  1. See, this is why I like the rain :) Which it's still doing here, by the way. This is the most English summer we've had in a long time!
Wow, so the deck's almost there then, with space at the back for a trampoline descent if I can persuade you? That's pretty good news too, you've got somewhere to sit and wish for rain from :-P
Heh, I like your poem for its brevity and matter-of-factness!

    Heat
    The devil's air conditioning
    Was definitely on the blink,
He was sweating in his office
    Wishing the corpses didn't stink.

  2. Heat

It was warm, standing there, in the mild winter heat.
Going back home to a cooler clime sounded so neat.
Though I'm generally happy about this decision,
The weather debate must not attract my derision.

  3. Tiny plants shrivel up and dry
As the sun rises in the sky
Vultures circle those soon to die
Pick their bones clean and then fly high.

  4. Greg - yes, there's room for one. No, there'll be no persuading me :P

Hah, now there's the start of a story with loads of potential for fun!

Writebite - right now, sweating away in this heat, I can appreciate the appeal of cooler climates...

Morrigan - great imagery and rhythm :)

  5. I think the heat has slowed my responses; I'm a day late!

    Heat

My wife stirs in her sleep, tosses the twisted sheet aside
She turns her fevered eyes to me, brushes damp hair away
“Please, just one,” she whispers faintly
Nodding, I agree to lower the thermostat one degree.

  6. Aholiab - if you're only a day late then you're doing a lot better than I am!

Haha, wonderfully unexpected final line :)
