The exercise:

Write four lines of prose about: the regular.

Worked 8:30 to 11:30 at the bakery this morning and it was definitely much busier than it has been. Helping out with an 8 to 10 shift tomorrow morning and then I get to enjoy a few days off.

Looking forward to that.

Mine:

"Ah, it's good to be back where everybody seems to know my name."

"What, even that guy?"

"Oh, no, he's new... if I see him around the next couple times I come in I'll have to go over and introduce myself."

"Do you ever think that you come into the Emergency Room a little too regularly?"

  1. I'm sure you enjoy the hustle and bustle afterwards, even if it's hectic at the time!
Hah, I wasn't expecting your last line, but it's wonderful! I'm just trying to work out if this is one of your characters that we've seen before or not, now :)

    The regular
"The regular verbform is used with verbs of all classes except six, which, uh, unfortunately makes it rather irregular. During the Pummellok Invasion the changes wrought on the language meant that only verbs of classes six and seven survived, and class seven only had three verbs in it to begin with. Similarly, the regular ending for adjectives is only used with two words because most of the adjectives were lost as well.
So, class, please turn to the Big Book of Irregular Verbs and we'll start memorising."

  2. The Regular
I felt parched as it was already warming up outside, but the heat I felt was added to by the stress of being hounded on the road unnecessarily by an impatient out-of-towner.
I sidled up to the gelato bar.
"The regular?" he said, more as a statement than a question.
I nodded as I handed over the money and dug the spoon into the fresh lemon sorbet, instantly blowing away the heat and cares.

  3. Greg - hah, it just might be. Didn't have anyone in mind at the time of writing it though.

Ah jeez, reading that is making my headache worse :P

Dragonly Oracle - Write bite! Welcome back! Love the new pen name :D

I hope you've been well. As you may have noticed, I'm miserably behind on comments. But I'm trying to catch up! Sometimes...

I like your take on the prompt - unexpected, yet perfectly executed :)

  4. Marc: cheers! I have followed yours from time to time but only felt like jumping in again recently. I may pop in occasionally.
Congrats on the family addition, BTW.
