The exercise:
Write two haiku about: the blackout.
Weather was quite nice today, so the parks were a bit busier than they have been recently. By early afternoon I was wishing I'd brought shorts to change into. With more of the same expected tomorrow I think I'll just start the day with shorts and suffer through the early morning cold.
Only ten days of work to go!
Mine:
Sitting in the dark
pining for a candle as
the monsters draw near
* * *
The wind rattles the
windows as another tree
topples in the yard

It's still warm here during the day but it's now cold enough overnight that I don't get to throw the duvet off anymore, and I appreciate it in the morning, so I think we're getting the same kind of chill as you. If that's so, I can see how you'd prefer to be slightly cold in the morning and comfortable once the sun is properly up. I have realised that both here and Malta have something the UK doesn't have, and that I miss: variability. In the UK I get weather: I get something different every few hours. Everywhere else I've been you get climate: what you get in the morning tends to be what you get for several days before a change happens. So... you're all boring :-P
I like both haiku equally today, though it took me a little bit of switching from one to the other before I realised that. Somewhere in your archives I think I've commented before that the candle in the dark is only good for helping the monsters find you though....
The blackout
After I caught the
Sledgehammer with my head, I
Lost all track of time.
Even though it's been
Eight years they still hope I'll wake.
Please just let me die.
We're all going to die
In the dark waiting for help
That will never come.
Bombs thumping in the
Dark. The planes can still find us
Awaiting our death.
Greg - yeah, it's a transitional time of year. Makes going out for the day a little more difficult, but I generally enjoy the temperatures at this point more than any other time.
Yes, I do recall you saying that before, now that you've mentioned it :)
Nice acrostic, and I think 'After I caught the sledgehammer with my face' might be my favorite opening to a haiku... ever.
Morganna - I like that your two haiku tie together so nicely, though I think I like the first best. That third line really packs a punch!
