The exercise:

Write about: lights.

Got some Christmas decorations up today. Don't have a tree yet, but that should come next weekend.

The exercise:

Write about: lighting a fuse.

Helping prepare next week's agenda felt like lighting a fuse today. Should be an interesting meeting.

The exercise:

Write about: the light.

With Rebecca and her boyfriend's help the raspberries were fully harvested by shortly after 10 this morning. The remainder of our time in the garden was spent mulching the new strawberry patch, which I'm hellbent on being better managed than the current patch that is drawing to a close this season.

So, yeah, felt good to get going with that.

This evening Rebecca's boyfriend, who is originally from Mexico, made us tacos with salsa and guacamole for dinner. Uh... yum? Yes, yum.

He's heading back to Vancouver tomorrow but is planning on returning for another visit in July. He is, needless to say, welcome back at any time.

Mine:

"You got a light?"

That's how it all started, with those four little words. I was standing on a bustling sidewalk, part of a crowd of people waiting to get into a night club. Everyone else seemed to be part of a group, doused in cheap cologne, perfume, and pre-drinks, but I was on my own.

I wonder if that's why she chose to approach me.

"Yeah, I do," I said. I started to reach for my lighter but then I noticed she didn't have a cigarette in her hand or, more noticeably, between her ruby red lips. "Uh... do you need one?"

"Not yet," she said with a smile and a wink, then turned and disappeared back into the crowd.

I tried to watch her go, craning my head this way and that, getting up on my toes. But it was like she was a ghost that had appeared only for me - no one else even seemed to notice her.

I shook my head, eventually, and returned to whatever thoughts were occupying my brain. School, most likely, but I can't say for sure now. That would have been as good a reason as any for me to hit the bar solo on a Wednesday night.

After a wait that lasted far too long (as per usual) I managed to escape the outside world and find solace in the dark, pounding heart of the club. I went straight to the bar (also as per usual) and ordered a drink. While I waited for my overpriced rum and coke, she appeared at my elbow.

"Hi again." Good lord, that smile. She must have practiced it. If she'd always smiled like that she must have been pretty damned used to getting her way with the boys.

"Hey." Ah, I was a smooth one.

"You still got that light?" I pretended not to hear, forcing her to ask again closer to my ear. Okay, maybe I was a little bit smooth.

"We're not allowed to smoke inside," I replied, feeling like a bore. Uncool, actually. And I so desperately wanted to seem cool to her.

"Oh, I know that, silly." Her eyes twinkled and she bumped her shoulder into mine, playfully. My knees went weak and I had to hold on to the bar in order to remain upright.

"Then why do you need a light?" I tried for teasing but I felt like I was coming across closer to stupid.

"I forgot mine at home," she said with a cute little shrug. "So how else am I going to burn this place to the ground?"

The exercise:

Welcome to July, happy Canada Day, and write about: the light.

Just getting everything out of the way right up front today. I need to get some sleep.

Mine:

There's a strange light in the sky tonight. I don't know where it is coming from - certainly not the sun or the moon. Perhaps it originates from some human contraption on the ground. That seems... unlikely, somehow.

It is a distraction, nothing more. I keep telling myself that but still my eyes are drawn to it. Still my imagination is consumed by its possibilities, by the mystery of it all.

It matters not. It means nothing. A fluke reflection, or refraction, or whatever it might be. There's no hidden meaning, no ominous warning hanging above us as we go about our private businesses in our separate, unconnected lives.

Unless, of course, it is all that and more.

Which is why I cannot drag myself away from the sight of it.

The exercise:

Let's go with: a light in the dark.

Because Kat and I went up to Oliver to watch Cave of Forgotten Dreams, the first in this year's Oliver Film Club series. Kat's parents got me the tickets for my birthday, which was very thoughtful.

The rest of the day was spent finishing off the garden prep for winterizing, running errands in town, and attending our election worker training session. Election day is November 19th, and it's looking like it's going to be a long one.

Mine:

There were certainly plenty of flashlights slashing through the dark caves in the movie, but sadly that's not where the prompt idea came from.

You see, the movie had a rather fascinating subject matter (incredibly old cave drawings discovered in France), but with a running time of an hour and a half there was just too much... wasted space, I suppose. In fact I'd guess that there may have been, grand total, about ten minutes of interesting footage.

Sprinkled very sparsely throughout.

So, by the time the credits rolled, I had come to think of those moments as lights in the darkness.

The darkness of Boring Town.

Hopefully the next movie in the series gets us back to Enjoyableville.

The exercise:

Let's go with: lights out.

We helped pick apples this afternoon, since Kat's parents have a ridiculous amount to get through in the next couple of weeks. It was fun, and I'll be back out there tomorrow.

Mine:

When I came back to the house to take care of the dishes late this afternoon, the power was out. Which was highly surprising, seeing as it was a warm, sunny day and the wind wasn't particularly strong.

Kat's dad came in to start making dinner about half an hour later and it was still out. He decided to make do with using the barbecue, even though what he'd planned on cooking was really meant for the stove top. So he lit the barbecue, came back inside... and the lights came back on.

He kind of shook his head, thought about using it anyway, but then went out and doused the flames.

About ten minutes later I was downstairs getting ready to take a shower. I'd wandered into the bathroom, only to spot a rather large spider crawling across the floor right in front of me. So I grabbed a tissue, looked back down and... the lights went out again.

"God. Damn. It."

I grabbed a flashlight, eventually found it again, and disposed of it. Then I took a shower in the mostly dark, while attempting to keep an eye out for more massive spiders, or any oversized insects for that matter. I'm pretty sure I heard Kat's dad go back outside and restart the barbecue at some point during all this.

Not long after I'd finished my shower the power came back on - this time for good, thankfully. I'd had quite enough of that, and I'm sure Kat's dad had as well. Plus, you know, posting this would have been rather impossible without any power.
