The exercise:

Write about something that is: impending.

Course assignment due Sunday night. I am very much in the struggling to get my crap together stage.

Good luck with the course assignment! I guess if you're busy with that we're going to miss our monthly visit to Out of the Woods then? Still, the course assignment does seem rather more important so I think it's the right decision :)

Impending
The sky was grey outside the Hall of Equals but the rain was holding off and the TV crew were filming with umbrellas open and ready nearby. The presenter, who represented the National News Network (or triple-N as most people called it), was shivering slightly as the wind was picking up and his suit, only three weeks old, was rather too thin for standing around outside in. A few passers-by moved on desultorily and a raven landed on a nearby tree branch and cawed as though to complain about the people standing on the grass, and then the little green light came on on the camera and they started recording.
"Impending doom," said the presenter, who'd been rehearsing this all morning. "The Minister today announced, less than ten minutes ago, that the country would be subsidising death and departure over health and wellness. The economic reforms, as he calls them, would be termed sanctions if another country were to inflict them on us, and while he assures us that this will lead to a leaner, greater country, it is the svelteness of famine and the greatness of the extent of the cemeteries."
He paused for effect and the raven cawed again. The presenter allowed the barest flicker of a smile on his face as the caw added, he felt, to the drama of the moment.
"Impending war," he continued. "The Minister further made it clear that with his decision to reduce the population by getting rid of the elderly and feeble by natural attrition -- let no-one call him a murderer for all that these people would not have died if he had not made this policy -- would produce a young, strong source of soldiers and hinted that further supply-chain and agricultural issues would be tackled by invasion and the acquisition of new land by force. It said that those who would desire peace should prepare for war, but I see no signs of peace in the Minister's vision of the future."
There was a shout, not too far off, and three uniformed policemen started walking swiftly over to the TV crew. The presenter barely smiled again; he knew the broadcast was live but this was still a little sooner than he'd expected. Never mind, he'd prepared for this too.
"Impending arrest," he said, watching the policemen get closer.

Greg - oh ye of little faith. I never miss a yearly, no matter how ridiculous I get about it.

Case in point...

Ah, a continuation of this bleak tale. I was half expecting Death and all his friends to make an appearance. Perhaps they still shall?
