The exercise:

Write about: something in the way.

I managed to remind myself of this when coming up with the prompt.

Well... I guess we had to meet the creatures sooner or later. Maybe they're friendly :)

And the video... wow, that must be old now!

Something in the way
"What the hell...?" muttered Ben, his words drawn out and quiet, almost under his breath. I knew exactly what he was thinking: where had this thing come from and had it been waiting for us. My heart seemed to start pounding heavily in my chest and my breath became shallower and faster, and it suddenly occurred to me that we'd never thought about how intelligent -- or not -- these things might be. We'd assumed, or at least I had, that they were some kind of animals, and with a chill I realised that the savagery of the attack that we'd seen had just led me further down that route.
"We might have underestimated them," I said quietly, and got a startled, and unhappy, look from Jimmy.
"What do you mean?" he said, his eyes returning quickly back to the shadowy creature that was blocking our way. It swayed its head from side to side as though sniffing, or maybe turning its head to see better. I couldn't see where its eyes were, but I remembered something about predators having forward facing eyes and prey having eyes in the sides of their head for better all-round vision.
"Did we ever stop to see if there was a method to their attack?" I asked. "Or did we just assume that wild animals did it?"
"Later," said Ben. His voice was flat and sharp; not exactly angry but definitely wanting to close off a conversation he thought was a waste of time. He might have been right. "It's not moving yet, it’s in our way, and I don't see anywhere for us to hide here so we back up to the end of this road."
Neither Jimmy nor I had a better suggestion, so we did. After a few steps the monster ahead of us took a couple of steps forward, favouring one leg, but maintained the distance.
"Interesting," said Ben. "Maybe it just wants to keep us away from that building."
"Or it's assessing us," said Jimmy. "Might be trying to decide if it can take all three of us at once."
"Think it knows about guns?"
We reached the end of the street and we all glanced around us, trying to keep the creature in sight while we worked out what to do next.
"The Elizabethtown folks had no guns on them," Ben said. "Doesn't tell us much but maybe Red can think about it when we're a bit safer. We go left; there's all buildings on that side for that creature so it can't get in front of us and cut us off. We walk out of its sight to that corner there, and then we run like Shanghai Suzie just found us up there towards the building with the two towers on the corners."
We walked to the corner feeling like at any minute we were going to be jumped on by some creature, and then with almost a sense of relief we started running. Almost instantly a hooting noise started up behind us.

Greg - oh yeah, I bet this one is super friendly. Just lost and looking for directions, is all...

You know, I actually kinda felt okay about how this was going for the guys... and then the hooting started.

Hopefully it's not a call for the others to join in on the hunt.
