Julie, the hair 'designer' who commanded the highest wages at the salon, shrugged with a hint of apology as she pointed at the scorch marks on the wall around the socket of the hair-dryer. "I'd call them shock-waves," she said, "since the power surge basically gave your hair a bit of an electric shock. And it's not really permanent, it only lasts until your hair falls out."
[Permanent waves might be slightly better known as "a perm" although I'm not sure I've heard of anyone having one in the last ten years or so. Either hair-styles have changed or there's some other way of achieving the effect now I guess.]
