I guess its close to pumpkin harvesting time so you've been gifted two hundredweight (I don't know Canadian measures... maybe a swimming-pool and a half, less two moose?) of pumpkins by your farming relatives? Hallowe'en is still a month away and I'm not sure what else would bring them to mind :)

@Morganna: I think you've captured the essence of autumn in a pumpkin there! I have no idea what the point of pumpkin pie is though, as every recipe I've seen seems to hide the pumpkin flavour under a huge amount of sugar and spices. Is it a textural thing?

Pumpkins
Cinderella just
Smells like pumpkin; Prince Charming
is getting hungry....

Butternut squash has
more flavour but carving it
is less fun for kids...

@Greg: I don't know -- I can definitely taste the pumpkin under the sugar & spices -- probably it is at least a little bit textural. But American pies are generally very sweet and pumpkin pie is one of the less sweet. Look up recipes for pecan pie and transparent pie (especially the latter) but be prepared for a sugar overload.

Morganna - mmm, pumpkin pie.

Greg - the return of pumpkin spice everything, actually. I take it that is less of a thing where you are?

Also: pumpkin pie is a cinnamon delivery system that I happen to especially enjoy.

Hah, love your first. Your second is also pretty great.

Morganna - yeah, I think we go light on the sugar so maybe that helps the pumpkin flavor come through more. Plus, as I have previously noted, cinnamon. Cinnamon is good.
