The exercise:

Write about: the recruits.

My parents arrived this evening. They'll be staying until Friday to help out with the boys while they're on spring break and Kat and I are working. I think all four of them were worn out and ready for bed at record times tonight.

Haha, I like the idea that you got both the boys *and* your parents to bed early to maximise the amount of time you and Kat can spend together without people interrupting :-D I hope you manage to find some time during their stay to all go out together though!

The recruits
As they were standing up and waiting for the bar's cloakroom to retrieve their coats, Fabian's tablet started buzzing. He stared at it in faint shock, and Rystin and Dread both stared at him when he didn't do anything about it immediately. Only when their coats arrive did Fabian shake himself a little, seeming to come back to his sense, and turn the buzzing off.
"There's a break in at the Museum," he said. "That's only the second time that's ever happened."
Dread looked intrigued as he slipped his arms into a green wool jacket with his rank clearly indicated on his shoulders while Rystin looked nervous.
"Any more information than that?" asked Dread when Fabian didn't reply.
"Not much," said Fabian frowning at the tablet. "That's... odd. It looks like it was in the administrative side, not where we keep anything valuable. And who would want to steal paperwork?"
"Cass," said Dread and even then it took Fabian a moment to pay enough attention to start laughing.
"Well, apart from her," he said. "Wait, you've remembered her name at last?"
"I guessed," said Dread. "You did mention someone called Cass earlier. Well, come on then, let's get you over to the Museum and let's see what's been taken. Were you using the skull of a Redcap as a paperweight, by any chance? Or had an umbrella made out of Byakhee leather?"
"Maybe someone found the rest of the Phase-beast," said Rystin, who still sounded nervous. "And thought to put it in your office since you were looking for it."
Dread's peal of delighted laughter rang out across the bar and he ushered the man and elf out in front of him.
"You don't have to come," said Fabian as Dread hailed a taxi.
"I know," said Dread. "But frankly, we're here and this is strange, and you're not going to get much better protection at this time of night than an artificer and a necromancer, are you? Think of us as the first recruits to your security detail!"
"Protection from what?" Fabian's voice was muffled by him bending down to get in to the taxi.
"That Phase-beast who wants his paw back," said Dread. "Or! Her paw. I seem to remember that the females are more deadly."

The Museum was quiet when they arrived but there were lights on high up in the building. Fabian glanced at them and sighed. "That's the floor my office is on," he said. "I don't like this, why would anyone be breaking into my office? The 'important' stuff in there is important to the people who have keys to it, no-one else. It's stupid, and that makes me feel like this is dangerous."
"That's just another word for fun," said Dread. "Get up there!"
They were met where the stairs opened onto Fabian's office-corridor. Fabian and Dread had taken the stairs with ease and Rystin was just a little out of breath. The security guard looked quite startled to see three people, and then even more surprised to see Fabian.
"Er, Mr. Director, Sir," she said trying to salute with both hands. "I wasn't expecting you! Not personally, anyway, Mr. Sir. I mean, Mr. Director. Sir Director. Sir."
"Quite," said Fabian gently easing past her. "Well, it is my office."
"Not exactly, Sir," said the guard. "More like just outside your office."
"What?"
Rystin's face twisted into a wry smile. "Wisp=elf magic," he said. "Lots of it. I think someone was trying to set a trap."

Greg - twas an unexpected benefit of the first night :) They all seemed to find more stamina as the week went on though!

I'm glad for Fabian's sake that the two of them went with him. I hope they're able to quickly uncover what happened and who is responsible for it, though I expect the latter will be the bigger challenge.
