The exercise:

You'll have to pardon me for being too obvious, but today's starter is: change.

Mine:

Thank you America.

You had me worried there - Obama may have been the clear favorite going into today's voting but I still had my doubts.

After all, you did elect Bush to a second term. Although to be fair, I'm not sure I would have voted for Kerry either. Nader for president?

Either way America, you took a leap forward today. I'm looking forward to seeing what Obama can accomplish in the next four (hopefully eight) years.

Congratulations on electing your first black president and, more importantly, the better man in this contest.

The Change

It came upon her
In doses.
Sometimes great moods,
Brooding,
Deep.
No words to contain them, they just swelled.
Sometimes it came out as a lash,
A cutting remark, unfounded,
Sarcasm,
A burst of anger, sheer as a cliff,
An abyss
What's on the other side
Of this madness?
This loss,
This ... finality?
Last chance going, going, gone, poof!
A phase of life receding,
Not any phase - THE phase, for woman.
No more chances after that, after the change.
Her status would be forever changed, too.
She would have to redefine herself.
And so she would, like millions before her had done,
In their lament for all that 'woman' stood for...
She didn't know it yet, but freedom lay ahead
On the other side of that abyss.
Freedom, in a different sense.
No more calendars, no more counting, wondering...
Some changes she would not like,
Others, she would find joy in,
Once she adapted.
Everything changes,
Nothing really stays the same.
