The exercise:

Write a four line poem about: opening night.

The Vancouver Canucks opened their 2017-18 season this evening with a 3-2 victory over Edmonton. They're not expected to be significantly better than the team that finished second-last in the league last season, but the first game of the year is always good for some baseless optimism.

Kat and I joined Becky and Adam in helping their parents finish off the apple pick this afternoon. The two of them have been going hard for much too long and are hitting a wall, so we're pitching in to get them over the finish line. The pick should get finished tomorrow morning.

Then all we have to do is convince them to get some well deserved rest.

Mine:

We're making our debut -
We're all brand new!
So, if it's okay with you,
I think I'll fake the flu...

I guess the first thing to do is point out that they didn't finish last last season, and even if they're only slightly better that means they could finish closer to the top. Babysteps... :) And they're off to a good start, so let's hope they keep the momentum going!
Good luck with the apple pick, I hope it finishes on time!
Hmm, your performers don't seem too keen on the opening night... maybe faking the flu is a good idea? Still, the repeated rhyme all the way through and the slightly disjointed lines make this an excellent piece of work, quite nicely summing up the terror the first time on stage!

Opening night
The phantom of the dressing rooms
Attends every first night show.
He widdles in the corners
And makes the actors want to go.

The curtains open
The stage revealed
The actors begin
Will the play live up to its promise?

Greg - yes, there's hardly room for them to be worse, is there? And the apple pick did finish on time, though I'm pretty sure I failed to mention that.

Thank you for the kind comments on mine :)

Your phantom sounds like quite the mischievous trouble maker. I like him! As long as he stays out of my dressing room...

Morganna - ah, that is the question, isn't it? Every single time that curtain opens for the first time. How terribly exciting. And excitingly terrifying...
