Write about: the birthday girl.
Happy birthday to my lovely wife. The boys and I are lucky to have you in our lives.

The exercise:
Write something which takes place at: the birthday party.
We had a StrongStart field trip at our farm this morning. Obviously I missed out on it, but it sounds like it went well. Max loves being the farm tour guide so I'm sure he was fully in his element.
With the sun shining all day there were more people out and about once again but it has yet to result in much additional work for me.
Sounds pretty ideal, actually. More of the same tomorrow?
Yes, please.
Mine:
The birthday boy is bawling
And throwing a fit since
His cake is splattered all over the
Room.
Guess he wasn't quick enough
To blow out the flames
Before the dynamite candles went
Boom.

The exercise:
Write about: the big birthday bash.
Had our first non U-pick pickup day this afternoon, with customers coming to collect their pre-ordered raspberries and cherries. I had an extra crate (twenty pounds or so) of cherries on hand for those who might have been enticed into buying more (or trying some if they'd only ordered raspberries) and sold all but three pounds of it.
Not bad at all.
Had a short visit with a very good friend from Vancouver and his girlfriend shortly after lunch. Those sorts of visits are never long enough but it was still great to see him again.
Mine:
"This party is going to be legendary bro!"
"Ugh. Please, no, little brother."
"What's the problemo?"
"That word is so overused these days."
"Which word? Party?"
"No. Just... no. Legendary. It's the new awesome."
"But your bash is going to be legit legendary - I made sure of it!"
"Dare I ask...?"
"I've got a dragon to light your birthday candles and when the celebration is over? Boom. Two unicorns to pop all the balloons. Legendary, big bro. Legendary."

The exercise:
Today is Kat's birthday - we went out for dinner, then we went out for dessert, now I'm going out cold. Je suis le sleepy.
The starter for today is: happy birthday.
Mine:
Happy birthday to you,
You are a dream come true;
Happy birthday to you,
Words will just never do,
English just has too few,
To give you your full due.

The exercise:
At the workshop last weekend our final writing exercise was to write a poem (or something similar) with the theme (and repeating phrase) of 'I am from...' Ruth read us an example but I can't for the life of me remember the name of the author.
I shared what I wrote and it was suggested to me later that I should share it on my birthday in some form or another (I had mentioned that my birthday is today). I thought that was a very nice idea, so here it is with a few minor edits. Where are you from?
Mine:
I am from Laurie and Aggie,
Joseph and Mary.
I am from a Maritime farm
and streets filled with Jamaican charm.
I am from families of nine
and palm trees and pine.
I am from the nearest beach
and the mountains most out of reach.
I am from dinner together every night
and "Go outside and get some light",
from "There is no swearing in this house"
and "You're as quiet as a mouse."
I am from the Air Force
and the teachings of the How To Be A Man course.
I am from the Stay At Home Mom
and the fiercest storms and deepest calm.
I am from Catholic guilt
and the hands that made my bedroom quilt.
I am from the Island of Vancouver
where Snow Birds practiced their maneuvers.
I am from a high school that was filled with white,
where my tanned skin nearly led to fights.
I am from the music and words that move me,
from melting ice in black coffee.
I am from Canada but I do not skate,
from stoic masculinity but "are you really straight?"
I am from van Gogh's museum in Amsterdam,
from Guinness in the pubs of Ireland.
I am from the sinking streets of Venice,
from a Brazilian's unexpected kiss.
I am from the vineyards of New Zealand,
from the smiles of the girls of Japan.
I am from the waters and the trees
but none of this truly captures me.
I am from this and so much more
but I am who I am to my very core.

The exercise:
Today marks the 50th consecutive day of my Daily Writing Practice, so to "celebrate" the starter for today is: your 50th birthday. How would you/did you celebrate it? What would be the perfect way to turn fifty? Or would you rather skip that one altogether?
Mine:
I'll start the day with a little lie-in because I'm pretty sure that in twenty years I'll still find sleeping in to be a treat. I don't want to envision a future where I don't enjoy lying in bed for half the morning.
The afternoon will be spent outside... maybe a nice hike in the mountains or forest. On the way back home I'd say a stop for ice cream would be in order. Oh, did I forget to mention I'll be in New Zealand? It's actually warm there in October, so getting ice cream would be a reasonable course of action.
I'd be happy to finish the day with a nice dinner out, somewhere with a view of the ocean and a great glass of wine. And of course Kat would be there throughout it all and we'd watch the sun go down together. That sounds just about perfect to me.
