Write about: a drawing.

Apparently it's been 11 years (almost; there's about a month's difference) since you last used 'drawing' as a prompt. And, looking back at your tale of Miss Darnwell I still approve of her looking after her pet rottweiler as well as she does :)

Drawing
Walls tower overhead
And we who stand in their shadows,
Drawn here by tales from dead
Men wonder if anyone anymore knows
What the walls are made of.

The walls draw in sunlight all day
And at night radiate heat
And we are drawn to them. We say
It is better to acknowledge defeat
And dwell in the shadows than to freeze.

Some leave, pale and etiolated.
They have surrendered to their fears of the dark.
Some fade into nothingness, predated
Upon by soldiers who perceive the mark
Of Cain, written in scars on their skin.

Campfires dot the darkness here and there,
Strangers who approach are turned away.
Everyone knows you must be aware
Of the soldiers who don't exist by day
Who were drawn to haunt these walls.

Greg - hah, I'd quite forgotten about that one. Thanks for the reminder!

Very eerie. Beautifully done. Not on my top ten list of places to visit.
