When dark meets light Aubergine and Adrian sat side by side in the aseptic, flat fluorescent lighting of the hospital A&E waiting room, not quite holding hands. The crates of beer were on the floor by Adrian's broken foot, and they were making inroads into them despite the glares of the nursing staff. "What do you think happens when dark meets light?" asked Adrian thoughtfully, and for a fleeting three seconds Aubergine wondered if he'd started learning about philosophy and the eternal hope that powers the human spirit. "I think it's like dogs: there's a bit of a fuss and and one of them comes out of top and you end up feeding both of them fresh meat."
