The exercise:

Before July gets away from us, let us return to Empires.

Edit: Sorry this went up earlier, I guess I messed up the time. Anyway, I finally got around to adding to last month's entry.

Hmm, we're starting to get into the action now, and none too soon either, since we're at August. Let's find out where the Mayor is going, though we've got quite a collection of people in this car now....

Empires
Heat rapidly built inside the car with four people squashed uncomfortably on the back seat. Stacey, on one edge next to Ben, wound down her window and tried not to resent Ana for having claimed the front passenger seat. Maria and Mariah, the other two on the back seat turned their heads in unison when she did so, but apart from glaring at her balefully refrained from complaining. David was driving, his face still a grey pallor, and Ana was leaning forward, watching the Mayor's car closely and giving unnecessary instructions to Ben.
Though, watching Ben's listless movements, Stacey wondered if they really were unnecessary, and felt a frisson of fear: a bad driver on the road right now would probably be more than David could cope with. This was not a good time to be in a car like this.
The Mayor seemed unaware that he was being followed and made no effort to speed up away from them, or turn his lights off and hide on dark roads. They descended the hill towards the town, but then the Mayor turned away and took the old Pickman road, out past the boarded-up studio and beyond the Whately house; then he turned south and the road broadened out a little.
"This can't-"
"-be right" said Maria and Mariah.
"This is-"
"-where the rich-"
"-live."
Stacey almost pointed out that the Mayor was rich, but stopped herself. The Mayor lived on the waterfront, right in the middle of town, and was well known for liking it there.
"He's stopping," said Ana. She stared out into the night. "I know this place, but... I've not been here."
"Old McDonald had a farm," murmured Ben, "R-A-D-I-O."
"It's E-I-"
"E-I-"
"O." said the Marias.
"He's right," said David. "This is Dr. McDonald's place. He lived before he retired."
"Who lived here after him?" asked Stacey.
"No-one," said Ana sitting back. The Mayor was getting out of his car, his face cast into relief by the car's interior light. "That's why I know it, the town tried to put a compulsory purchase order on it and there was a big fuss about it. It got dropped when the council started asking why it needed to be purchased since it's nowhere near any civic projects."
"Sounds weird," said Stacey.
"Dr. McDonald is the man-"
"-who had the plan-"
"-to create us." said the Marias.
"And what the hell does that mean?" Stacey didn't mean to snap, but the squeeze in the car, the heat, and the ever-increasing list of questions was getting to her. "Damn it, I'm asking the Mayor!"
She opened the car door.

Quick update (Aug 13): as my next addition follows directly on from this I'd recommend only adding to the August post since all of our characters are in the same place now! Sorry :(
