Perseverance Unlike a rat I find myself scrambling towards what is probably A sinking ship. The sides are slimed with weed and slippery, but with perseverance I crest the side and slide across the deck.

Ooh, your narrator has found a ship! Well, a sinking one, but a ship all the same. I hope that it turns out to be better than... not finding a ship.
