Heh, the narrator is motivated mostly by necessity....

Motivations
As the viziers and the janissaries hurry through the gates
To see who — or what — has invaded Al-Amrit
He lifts his shirt and shows me white lines of ancient scars
And I understand his motivations and do not fear them.

Not entirely sure what your narrator is seeing, but I'm glad it's... reassuring? Not sure that's the right word...
