The exercise:

Write a review from an unhappy customer. Or lots of reviews from unhappy customers. Or all from the same unhappy customer.

You get the idea.

Inspired by a thought I had as I was leaving the pharmacy on my lunch break today after picking up a prescription I'd dropped off yesterday.

The exercise:

In case you missed yesterday's update...

NaNoWriMo 2009: Complete

So, with that in mind, today's prompt is: retrospection.

Yeah, it got long - but at least I kept it under 1,667 words!

Mine:

I'll be honest: from the moment I decided to do NaNoWriMo there was no doubt in my mind that I would hit 50,000 words. When I have a definite goal, especially with a public one like this one was, I find a way to get there.

Which makes me wonder what else I could accomplish if I simply announced that I would have it done thirty days (or however long) from now.

But that's a thought for a later time. Right now I just want to enjoy this feeling. Because, no matter how certain I felt at the beginning, this still feels real, real good. Accomplishment is a big part of that feeling, as well as a touch of relief to have the pressure off.

I'm also all kinds of excited to get back to writing other things. A Fighting Chance, the first novel I started and now the second to be completed, is approaching its finale. But not today.

Will I do this again next year? Without a doubt, barring something massive getting in the way. I can't imagine what that something would be though.

But for now, I'm going to let Lessons In The Dust sit on the back burner. I'll open it up in either January or February and begin the editing process but until then I'm going to do my best to forget about Ethan and Barrett and the earthquake that forced them together.

Oh, I mentioned on my birthday that I might have some good news. Well it's looking pretty certain that it's not going to happen, so I think it's safe to explain now. I received an email from NaNoWriMo asking for my permission to have my book info sent over to the artist in charge of the 30 Covers, 30 Days project.

Of course I said yes. I was told that 15 books were being sent for his consideration for the first 7 covers, so I had an almost 50/50 chance which was very exciting. I didn't get picked but just being in that first group, when there were some 100,000 people signed up, was an honor.

It would have been pretty cool, and it would have put a lot of eyes on my story, but I'm not too disappointed it didn't work out. It was just a thrill to even be considered. Completely unexpected to say the least.

It's been a good month. Now it's time to ease into December. And to cheer on my fellow Protagonizers as they approach the finish line.

Thanks for letting me share this trip with you.

The exercise:

Well. One full year of writing every day. It's kind of an odd feeling to have reached this little 'milestone' to be honest. It doesn't really feel like an accomplishment at this point. Writing every day is just what I do.

Regardless of how I might feel about it, I'm still going to mark the occasion. So today's prompt, if you care to indulge, is: a year in review.

Mine:

Writing every day for a year is bound to produce some right awful crap. And it has. But there are some good creations to be found in that pile, if one is willing to get very, very dirty.

Lucky for you, I am. So here, in date order, are some of my highlights from the year. Both my own and from others.

Surprisingly it only took two days of practice before I wrote something I really liked. Looking back at it now, I can see a story developing from it. Hmm.

Geez, I wrote a lot more prose back then. Obviously before I went and joined Protagonize.

Okay, seriously. I was like Mr. Prose. This is going to take a long time to get through.

I would be remiss not to mention one of my favorite Def Poetry Jam Friday posts.

So much prose. I had totally forgotten about this one. It makes me smile.

Ooh, a poem! This is one that still makes me laugh.

A little bit about me on my 30th birthday, originally written at a writing workshop. Remains one of my favorite pieces of writing.

This one I'm pointing out mostly due to Ana's comment. But I'm also quite fond of the writing itself :)

Oh I quite like this. Did I really write that? Huh.

This legitimately made me laugh out loud. Still does, sadly.

I think these might be my favorite haiku that I've written here :)

I still like the peace that permeates this piece.

It's sad but I still like it. I'm allowed to be sad every now and again. Plus that was the post that sparked g2's poetry craze :)

God, this still cracks me up. How embarrassing.

This too, actually.

Okay, that's enough of that. I won't do any within the last month, that would be silly. And that took so long that I'll have to do a separate post on my favorite comments. Perhaps tomorrow. I hope you all found something you enjoyed in all that.

And thank you, from the bottom of my little heart, for reading and sharing your own writing over the past year. Let's keep it going :)

The exercise:

With the end of the year at hand, today's starter is simply: 2008.

Mine:

We’re about to enter the final year of the first decade of this millennium. Do you remember all the nonsense going on at the end of 1999, with all the y2k concerns bouncing around? Yeah, that was 9 years ago.

2008 has been a year of big birthdays. I, along with the vast majority of my friends, turned 30; throw in two 60ths, a 70th and an 80th within my family’s and Kat’s and you’ve got a pretty significant year.

I’ve done a lot of writing this year and I feel like I’ve made some big improvements. I don’t know about practice making perfect, but it sure makes a difference. I’m finally starting work on a novel, the first draft of which will be going online starting this Friday over at Protagonize - I’ll be sure to post a note here when it begins. I know it’s going to need a lot of rewriting but I’m looking forward to finally reaching that stage in the process.

We’re celebrating the end of the year tonight by having some friends over for drinks, games and general good cheer. I’m looking forward to it.

And I’m looking forward to 2009 and all it holds in store.

Happy New Year’s to you and yours; be safe and be joyful.
